So I have always heard about this fun little tradition called "The Elf on the Shelf." So I looked around and found an adorable one on Etsy and thought we would give it a try. The basic premise is that the Elf appears at your house around Thanksgiving and watches the children and then leaves at night to report to Santa. He then reappears the next morning in a different location (usually a shelf). We are having tons of fun with our elf "Elmer". The kids are extremely well behaved and helpful when they remember he is watching.
The other morning the Elf had no yet made his trip to the North Pole and Ryan came to lay with me in bed and he said "Can I go hunt for the Elf now? It's 7:01...(We have a rule that you can't hunt for the elf until 7 am) Crap... " So I told him to wait for a minute that I wanted to snuggle a little bit but I had to go take some headache medicine. Of course the Elf was on the window above the front door and I couldn't reach him even when I jumped.... Crap.. (Chris is just too tall) so I had to sneak into the kitchen and grab a pair of tongs and not get busted by Joe who was not up yet!!! So I get it hidden and Joe comes down and i tell him to go in our room so we can snuggle. I go in my room and the boys say "you were hiding the Elf!!" I said " I'm not going to touch that thing I don't want to be on the naughty list, Anyway it's to high for me to reach remember where it was?" (AAAHHHH) My boys are at the age where they say that the kids at school say that your parents are Santa, I tell them that I still believe and that even if parents may bring presents I still believe in Santa. But, then we talked about the how Santa was really a minor role in the whole Christmas holiday and they understood ...whew. I want them to hang on to the childlike magic of Christmas as long as possible. Which brings me to this morning Chris left for work early and Joe and I could not find the Elf anywhere...And the saying says that if you touch him the magic will be gone. I could see Joe getting nervous. The Elf was in reach of the boys yesterday and so I started wonder.... so before I got into the shower I called Chris and he told me where it was and by then Joe was losing it saying "okay I touched it I'm not getting anything for Christmas...." Ryan was stressing that this would affect him as well. I then looked up and said hey look what I see and Ryan fell on the floor and said "Thank You Jesus, Thank you Jesus!!! Joe said..Oh I think maybe I didn't touch him.... So a few minutes later Ryan was at the kitchen table coloring a picture here's what he did!!
(The picture says...Dear Mr Elf We are so Sorry for tuching you!!! Your Friend Joe and Ryan) Ryan said that he wrote "we" because it sounded to weird to write Joe are so sorry for.....hummm???
